Some of the Named Scholarships at NDFS

The Carolyn L Quinn Memorial Scholarship

Born in North Adams, MA in 1937, Carolyn (Giglotti) Quinn graduated from Drury High School in North Adams and studied nursing at the Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing at Pittsfield General Hospital. She trained at the Northampton State Hospital in Psychiatric nursing and later at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in pediatrics.

She met George Quinn of Northampton at a downtown soda fountain while she was training at the state hospital. The two married and settled in Leeds, where they raised three sons: Ed, Tom and Mark, all of whom attended Northampton schools. Carolyn worked as a nurse at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in various areas: in the surgical unit; as a floor supervisor; and, at the end of her career, in the maternity department.

Carolyn was very involved in her church, St. Catherine of Alexandria in Leeds. She also volunteered for the Leeds Civic Association and the PTO of Leeds Elementary School, where her good friend Kay Sheehan, one of the founding members of Northampton Dollars for Scholars, was principal. "My mom loved taking care of people - she used to take care of a lot of people in the neighborhood - and loved her job at the hospital," her son Tom Quinn explained. So when Carolyn passed away in 1994, and her husband wanted to memorialize her contributions to the community, he decided a scholarship was the best way to honor her.

The Carolyn L. Quinn Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who intends to pursue an education in healthcare. To make a donation in Carolyn's memory, please go to our DONATION PAGE. Please be sure to note that your donation is intended for this scholarship when you make your donation. Thank you.

The Don & Joan Sullivan Memorial Scholarships

Don and Joan Sullivan were both Northampton natives. Don graduated from Northampton High School in 1948, earned a degree in business from the University of Notre Dame in 1952, served in the United States Army from 1953-1955, and then worked for the family general contracting business, D. A. Sullivan & Sons, Inc. until his passing. Joan graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1950 and earned a nursing degree from Springfield Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Boston College.

Don was proud to serve as president of D. A. Sullivan & Sons, Inc. which remains the oldest family business in Northampton. Don was deeply passionate about sports. He played football, baseball, and basketball during high school and played intramural sports in college. He also played in the youth and adult city leagues. He enjoyed attending athletic events that his children and grandchildren were involved in, and he loved golf.

Joan was dedicated to the nursing profession. After starting a family, she taught nursing part-time at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School when it offered a licensed practical nursing program.

Both Don and Joan were very active in the community. Don was a lifelong member of the Elks Club and Rotary Club.  He was a past president of the Three County Fair Association and an incorporator on several different banking boards. Joan volunteered for the American Cancer Society and in her church and neighborhood.

The Don Sullivan Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who participated in Northampton High School athletics, is active in the community, and has plans to pursue a career in business or construction management.
